Prime Movers for Sale in Brisbane
Live prime mover stock across Queensland, where the dealers cluster, and why Queensland specification is genuinely different from southern trucks.
Queensland is the most distinctive prime mover market in the country, because the work is. Long distances, road train routes north and west, high ambient temperatures and heavy vocational demand from mining and agriculture. Trucks are specified for it, and that specification follows them into the used market.

Where the dealers are
- Brisbane's south-west industrial belt — Wacol, Darra, Richlands, Rocklea. The main concentration, and where most franchise heavy-duty dealers sit.
- Northern Brisbane around Brendale and Narangba.
- Toowoomba, which is a serious truck town in its own right and the gateway to the Darling Downs and the west.
- Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville, servicing mining and northern freight with genuinely different stock.
- Cairns and the far north, smaller but with its own market.
Why Queensland specification differs
Road train and B-double capability
Many Queensland prime movers are specified for higher combination masses than a comparable southern truck — heavier rear axles, higher-rated suspension, more driveline, sometimes triple road train rated. If you are buying for single-trailer work, you may be paying for capability you will never use and carrying the extra tare weight forever. If you are buying for combination work, a southern truck may simply not be rated for it. Check the GCM plate rather than assuming.
Cooling and heat
Sustained high ambient temperatures are hard on cooling systems, air conditioning, batteries and tyres. A truck that has spent its life running north in summer has had a harder time of it than the odometer suggests. Look closely at radiator and intercooler condition, and treat working air conditioning as essential rather than a nicety — it is a fatigue-management issue, not comfort.
Bonneted trucks are common
Queensland runs a much higher proportion of bonneted American trucks than the southern states, for heavy haulage and road train work. They hold value strongly here. Kenworth led the national heavy-duty segment in 2025 with 3,347 units and 23.4% of the segment, and Queensland is a large part of why.
Dust and corrosion
Inland and mine-site trucks carry dust into everything — air intake, alternators, electrical connectors. Coastal north Queensland trucks carry salt and humidity. Both leave evidence if you look for it, and both are more revealing about how a truck was used than the service book.
The used prime mover checklist that matters most here
- GCM rating on the plate, checked against the work you actually intend to do.
- Cooling system condition, and evidence of any overheating history.
- Air conditioning working properly, not "just needs a regas".
- Driveline and diff service history — the expensive items on a high-kilometre truck.
- Where it worked. Line haul, mine site and local work wear completely different components.
- Whether a major rebuild has happened, and the invoice proving it.

Common questions
Where are the main truck dealers in Brisbane?
Mostly in the south-west industrial belt at Wacol, Darra, Richlands and Rocklea, with a further cluster in the north around Brendale and Narangba. Toowoomba is a significant truck market in its own right, and Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville serve northern freight and mining.
Is a Queensland prime mover specified differently?
Often, yes. Many are rated for higher combination masses for B-double and road train work, with heavier axles and suspension. That is essential if you need the rating and unnecessary tare weight if you do not. Always check the GCM on the compliance plate against your intended use rather than assuming from the model.
Does Queensland heat damage trucks?
Sustained high ambient temperatures are demanding on cooling systems, air conditioning, batteries and tyres. Inspect radiator and intercooler condition carefully and look for any history of overheating. Treat functioning air conditioning as a requirement rather than an extra — it is a driver fatigue issue.
