Machinery Under $50,000

What fifty thousand dollars buys across excavators, skid steers, forklifts and tractors — generated from live listings, with the honest version of what to expect at each size.

Fifty thousand is the budget where a lot of businesses buy their first machine rather than hiring one. It buys real capability, but capability concentrated in smaller classes — and the difference between a good buy and an expensive mistake at this level comes down almost entirely to hours and documentation.

What the budget reaches, by class

ClassWhat $50k typically reachesThe thing to check hardest
Mini excavator, 1–3.5tLate model, moderate hours, sometimes near newRubber tracks and the slew bearing
Midi excavator, 5–8tMid-life with real hoursUndercarriage wear and pin play
20 tonne excavatorHigh hours, end of first lifeUndercarriage — this is the expensive one
Skid steer / CTLGood choice at this budgetHours on the drive motors, tracks or tyres
Forklift, 2.5–3tStrong position, wide choiceMast wear, chains, hour meter honesty
Tractor, 60–120hpOlder but sound, or a small late modelTransmission, hydraulics, hours vs condition
TelehandlerOlder, higher hoursBoom wear pads and hydraulic cylinders
On a tracked machine the undercarriage is commonly the single largest maintenance cost across its life, and a full replacement on a 20-tonne excavator runs into tens of thousands. It is also the thing least often inspected properly, because it is dirty and at ground level. At this budget it is the difference between a bargain and a liability.

Hours matter more than years

A machine with 4,000 hours in eight years has averaged 500 hours a year — light, intermittent work, probably with long idle periods that bring their own problems. The same 4,000 hours in three years is heavy, continuous use, probably better maintained because downtime was costing someone money. Neither is automatically better; what matters is whether the service history matches the story the hour meter tells.

  • Ask for the service records, not a description of them.
  • Compare hours against wear. A low-hour machine with a worn-out undercarriage has had its meter interfered with or has lived somewhere abrasive.
  • Check whether it was on a maintenance contract. Dealer-serviced machines with complete records justify a premium.
  • Ask what it did. Quarry, civil, farm and hire fleet machines wear in different places.

Common questions

What machinery can I buy for under $50,000?

Realistically: a late-model mini excavator, a mid-life midi excavator, a good skid steer or compact track loader, a solid 2.5 to 3 tonne forklift, or an older mid-horsepower tractor. A 20-tonne class excavator at this budget will be high-hour and near the end of its first working life.

Are machine hours or age more important?

Hours, but only read alongside condition and service history. Four thousand hours over eight years means light intermittent use; the same hours over three years means heavy continuous use, often with better maintenance. A machine whose wear does not match its hour meter is the one to walk away from.

What is the biggest hidden cost on a used tracked machine?

The undercarriage — chains, rollers, idlers, sprockets and track shoes. It is commonly the largest maintenance expense over a machine's life and a full replacement on a 20-tonne excavator can run into tens of thousands of dollars. It is also the most frequently skipped part of an inspection.
